Commonly Abused Drugs in Wilmington

In Wilmington, heroin addiction and prescription drug abuse is spreading like wildfire. As the price of prescription pain pills rises, more and more people are turning their attention to heroin as a cheaper alternative to get high.

Residents of Wilmington are at a high risk for potential heroin overdose. The entire state of North Carolina has had a high rate of heroin overdose deaths since the early 2000s. In one year, heroin overdose deaths rose from 77 in 2011 and 150 in 2012.

As a result of the high overdose rates throughout North Carolina, the state has distributed Narcan to first responders. As police and health officials continue to use Narcan, the North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition (NHRC) has reported at least 300 lives saved since the program began in 2013.
