Family Therapy Addiction Treatment Program
When individuals develop a substance abuse problem, it’s not uncommon for loved ones to turn to a family rehab center for help. That’s because drug or alcohol addictions have far-reaching consequences for a household: It’s only a matter of time before a love one’s substance abuse threatens to tear the family apart.
At The Treatment Center of the Palm Beaches, we recognize that addiction is a disease that impacts the family at every level. Therefore, we encourage our clients’ loved ones to participate in the recovery process through our family therapy addiction treatment program.
Numerous studies, including one published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), have discovered that those who participated in family therapy were more likely to maintain their sobriety than those who did not. As a result, we are dedicated to providing the highest level of care both to those struggling with addiction and their family members.
Addiction’s Impact on the Family
Addiction’s negative impacts on a family are well researched. According to the American Psychological Association, family members struggling with substance abuse have a higher propensity for illness, domestic violence and personal conflicts.
Family members, often ignorant of the addiction their loved one is grappling with, are left to reconcile this new, disturbing behavior without context. Major shifts in behavior are just one of the many ways that family members are directly harmed by a loved one’s battle with addiction.
This tendency for someone’s unhealthy behaviors to negatively impact the rest of the family is described by SAMSHA as the “family disease model” of substance abuse. At The Treatment Center, our goal is to treat the entire family and help foster healing in each individual who has been uniquely impacted by a loved one’s substance abuse or addiction.
Family Therapy Highlights Harmful Behaviors
One of the ways that family therapy is effective in treating the disease of addiction is by improving communication between loved ones. Clear communication makes it possible for family members to address a loved one’s substance abuse directly. In many cases, the family member with a substance abuse problem is unaware of how his or her behaviors are negatively impacting the rest of the family.
Open communication, facilitated by family therapy, allows for family members to speak openly about these issues without fear of their concerns being rejected. Once these conversations have taken place, family members can establish a higher level of mutual accountability.
Family Therapy For Addiction Exposes Toxic Emotions
The self-destructive behaviors that characterize addiction have lasting consequences for the rest of the family. It’s not surprising when these negative emotions evolve into resentment toward the individual struggling with substance abuse. Unfortunately, these same individuals are more likely to become defensive and subsequently relapse when they believe that they have lost the support of their family.
This resulting tension encourages more substance abuse, creating even greater feelings of mistrust between family members. A family therapy program provides an opportunity for participants to identify and correct these toxic behavioral patterns.
Experience Our Family Substance Abuse Rehab Center
At The Treatment Center, we recognize the importance of engaging family members during the recovery process. Our family therapy program can be incorporated into every level of care we offer and act as a supplement to any of our substance abuse rehab treatment plans.
The family therapy program consists of two-day intensive family workshops that provide loved ones with the tools necessary to guide themselves and other family members through the addiction recovery process. These workshops recur every three weeks and are led by an experienced rehab professional therapist. As a client works through his or her substance abuse issues at The Treatment Center, these monthly meetings provide an important source of emotional support.
Workshops Facilitate Stronger Familial Connections
Our family therapy program is guided by licensed specialists who utilize a number of therapeutic tools to help families overcome the disease that is addiction. Role play, guided drama and reenactment exercises play a critical role in our family therapy program. Participants are provided a rare opportunity to step into the shoes of other family members and learn to better appreciate each other’s point of view. Exercises like these can help bring families closer together, build trust and relieve emotional frustration that would otherwise derail the recovery process.
