12 Step Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Program Focused On Lifelong Sobriety
Studies have proven that for long-term recovery, a 12-step rehab program increases the chance of abstaining from drugs and alcohol, improves overall health, and boosts social interaction. When combined with addiction treatment by a licensed staff, the chances of maintaining sobriety amplifies tremendously. Millions of people have recovered using 12-step programs.
At The Treatment Center, we offer 12-step programs for both drug and alcohol addiction. During residential and outpatient treatment, our clients go through a 12-step program while receiving specialized individual and group therapy.
The History of the 12 Step Recovery Process
The 12-step program is the cornerstone of Alcoholics Anonymous. Bill Wilson founded Alcoholics Anonymous on June 10, 1935. Published in 1939, the first edition of Alcoholics Anonymous (The Big Book) was written by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith.
While desiring to both simplify and expand on the six basic steps of addiction recovery from The Oxford Group, Wilson added the 12 steps in chapter 5, titled “How It Works”. Later in 1953, Wilson revised The Big Book with Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions.
The 12-step program is a basic, transparent and spiritual approach on how to stay clean and sober in recovery. It was created so that the steps would be easy to understand and follow by those in recovery. The program is meant to bring awareness about addiction, clarity, and self-discovery through self-forgiveness and forgiveness of others.
Why The 12 Step Program is So Effective
The 12-Step program has proven to be the most effective in recovery when combined with other therapies. Just the act of people connecting and identifying with one another by sharing their stories breaks the social stigma of addiction and encourages accountability.
This approach creates an open dialogue, which calls for more transparency about addiction and reveals how to manage life in recovery. The 12-step program has saved many lives since its inception in the 1930s.
