Home of the international Chery Blossom Festival, Macon is the fourth largest city in Georgia with a population of 417,473 residents. Macon has about three interstate highways running through it, with access to Savannah, Atlanta and northern Florida.

Georgia is considered a high intensity drug trafficking area (HIDTA).  Due to the close proximity of larger cities and its quick access to the highway, illicit drugs often make their way through the city from drug trafficking. Substance abuse issues are common throughout the city.

Substance Abuse in Macon, GA

As with the rest of the country, prescription drug abuse is becoming a huge issue in the city of Macon. There is also a great concern for more serious drug use of synthetic drugs and heroin.

The most commonly abused drugs in the city include:

  • Marijuana
  • Heroin
  • Prescription drugs
  • Synthetic drugs

Phenazepam, a strong muscle relaxant, is currently taking its toll on Macon residents. About five times stronger than Valium, the dangerous drug is causing a string of overdoses and one death of a college student in the Macon area.

The state of Georgia has now banned the drug because it is being marketed as Xanax. Young people often take the drug with alcohol, which makes it even more lethal.
