Common Drugs in Lowell, Massachusetts

According to the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS), thousands of Lowell residents are seeking addiction treatment. Residents are often seeking treatment for the following substances:

  • Alcohol
  • Heroin
  • Prescription opioids
  • Cocaine

One-third of Lowell residents in BSAS contracted rehab facilities are being treated for alcohol addiction. Although hundreds of residents are treated for alcoholism every year, there are still many residents that are in need of treatment.

People in Lowell are also seeking treatment for heroin addiction. In fact, nearly 50 percent of residents at drug rehabs are being treated for heroin.

Prescription drug abuse has reached epidemic levels in The Bay State, and Lowell has not been able to escape it. Many Lowell residents have become addicted to prescription opioids. Often, prescription opioids are a gateway drug for heroin.

Rehab facilities in Massachusetts are also treating residents for cocaine addiction. However, residents of Lowell are not seeking treatment for the drug as often as heroin or alcohol.

Massachusetts treatment centers have reported that residents are also abusing the following substances:

  • Marijuana
  • Ecstasy
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Crystal meth

Regardless of the substance that Lowell residents are addicted to, recovery is possible.
