Substance Abuse in Knoxville, TN

The accessibility of Interstate 40 and Interstate 75 makes Knoxville the ideal location for drug trafficking. Law enforcement, government officials and addiction specialists report that the following substances are abused frequently in the Knoxville area:

  • Heroin – Like many other cities in Tennessee, Knoxville has seen a surge in heroin addiction.  Law enforcement and government officials are troubled that a number of young people are abusing the drug.  The Metropolitan Drug Commission reports that 2.5% of Knox County high school students have used heroin before.

  • Prescription drugs  - The majority of heroin addicts start off abusing prescription opiates. Once prescription drugs become too expensive or residents can no longer obtain them from doctors, they will turn to heroin a cheaper alternative.

  • Methamphetamine  –  Meth abuse is still prevalent in Knox County. However, law enforcement reports that most meth labs in the area are one-pot setups, rather than large labs. One-pot setups and the shake-and-bake methods are typically for personal use, not for manufacturing on a large scale.

  • Ecstasy – With Knoxville being a college town, it’s not surprising that ecstasy is prevalent throughout the city.
