Heroin overdose deaths account for about 32 percent of all Kentucky overdose deaths. Prescription drug abuse of painkillers and sedatives is a huge epidemic throughout Henderson and Henderson County.

Substance Abuse in Henderson

Prescription drug abuse and heroin addiction is a rising epidemic in Kentucky, and residents of Henderson continue to be affected by substance abuse and prescription drug overdose. In 2011, there were about 22 heroin overdose deaths in Kentucky, and by 2013, there were 230 heroin overdose deaths.

Henderson County has a rising issue of seniors abusing prescription drugs. Unfortunately, physicians often prescribe more opioids (painkillers) for longer than necessary, and seniors have many complications due to the effects from prolonged use.

Commonly abused prescription drugs include:

  • OxyContin
  • Vicodin
  • Fentanyl
  • Percocet
  • Xanax
  • Valium

Many counties in Kentucky are working with state and local drug task forces to try to curb the rate of prescription drug and heroin abuse. As many states have already done, there are currently laws in place to arm first responders with Narcan to help reverse the effects of potential prescription drug and heroin overdose.
