Common Drugs in Cleveland

In 2008, there were about 17,000 substance abuse admissions in Cleveland, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Researchers have noticed certain trends about substance abuse in the Cleveland area.  For adults over the age of 25, alcohol was the primary substance among admitted patients followed by marijuana. However, researchers found that adults over the age of 35 the primary substance that they were being treated for was smoked cocaine.

Cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, prescription drugs, and ecstasy are some of the most common drugs that are plaguing Cleveland.

Cocaine and crack cocaine are readily available in the Cleveland area. These drugs are often taken with alcohol, prescription painkillers, marijuana and heroin.

Another drug that is highly available in Cleveland is heroin. Local law enforcement is concerned about the increase in heroin use. More than 40 percent of drug-related deaths in the Cleveland region are linked to heroin.

Prescription drug abuse is a problem that is sweeping across the United Sates. Sadly, Cleveland has not been immune to this epidemic. It is not common for residents to abuse prescription opioids such as Vicodin, Percocet, Opana, OxyContin and methadone. In addition, prescription sedatives are also being abused at high rates. Valium, Xanax and Ambien can be easily obtained on the streets.

One of the most popular drugs among young adults is ecstasy. Oftentimes, the drug is used with alcohol and marijuana to intensify the high.

The majority of people in Cleveland enter a treatment facility because of the criminal justice system or they decide that they need help on their own.
