Substance Abuse in West Virginia

Substance abuse is a huge public health concern in the Charleston area. Law enforcement, government officials and addiction specialists report that the following substances are being abused in the area.

  • Prescription drugs - In the Charleston area, prescription drug abuse is on the decline now that law enforcement is shutting down pill mills. Now that prescription painkillers are harder to obtain, many residents have to turn to abusing heroin.

  • Heroin - Like many other cities, Charleston has been affected by the heroin epidemic. In 2014, Kanawha County had the third-most heroin-related overdose deaths in the state.

  • Alcohol – While heroin and prescription drug abuse has eclipsed alcoholism in the state, many Charleston residents are still struggling with alcohol abuse. In West Virginia, teenagers and young adults often engage in underage drinking and binge drinking.
