Substance Abuse in Boston

Over 15,000 Boston residents received addiction treatment in 2012, according to the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS). People in Boston are often receiving treatment for the following substances:

  • Heroin
  • Alcohol
  • Cocaine
  • Marijuana

Opiate addiction is prevalent throughout the state of Massachusetts. In fact, Governor Patrick recently declared the state’s opiate epidemic a public health emergency. Heroin is one of the most abused opiates in the Boston metropolitan area. Almost half of all Boston residents at BSAS facilities were admitted for heroin dependence.

Massachusetts rehab centers are also treating thousands of Boston residents for alcohol addiction. One out of three residents at BSAS facilities were treated for alcoholism.

Although cocaine and crack cocaine are not abused as often as heroin and alcohol, hundreds of people are still being treated for these drugs.

Marijuana is another drug that is abused often in the Boston area. Massachusetts rehab facilities admitted hundreds of Bostonians for marijuana dependence.

Addiction professionals are also reporting that Boston residents are abusing:

  • Prescription painkillers (e.g. oxycodone, Vicodin)
  • Prescription stimulants (e.g. Ritalin, Adderall)
  • Ecstasy
No matter type of substance Boston residents are dependent on, they can safely recover at The Treatment Center.
