Family Workshops at The Treatment Center
By Family Therapist, Judi Jenett

Family Therapist, Judi Jenett | The Treatment Center blog

For families, the pain of living with a loved one’s addiction can lead to shame, secrecy and isolation.  Spouses often feel responsible for their partner’s addiction, and parents feel responsible for the addictions of their children. Children of addiction often suffer from abuse or neglect, and they often develop addictions of their own later in life. Families feel a need to keep the addiction a secret out of shame, fear of criticism, pride, a desire to protect the addict, and fear of financial consequences. In trying to keep these difficult secrets, family members often become controlling and rigid, yet at the same time, they may feel powerless, hopeless, and depressed. In a very real sense, the family becomes as disabled by the addiction as the addicted person does. For children and young adolescents it is a confusing time because no one is talking about what is really going on in the house. Everyone is affected both emotionally, physically, mentally, socially and spiritually.

Although addiction causes great stress in families, it need not destroy them. With proper treatment, families can become stronger and closer. Successful recovery of the family means considerably more than mere abstinence by the substance-abusing member. For months and often years, the family challenged by substance abuse has been functioning in an unhealthy manner to accommodate the disease. Families will need to unlearn coping mechanisms that evolved to adapt to the disease and learn new healthy thinking patterns, emotional responses, and behaviors.

The Treatment Center recognizes the importance of the family as a whole unit and encourages family members to attend our biweekly intensive Family Workshops. At our workshops, family dynamics are explored openly and respectfully so that each person feels heard. Overcoming communication difficulties and interaction with the chemically dependent family member are of top priority. Those attending the program receive the tools necessary to begin the process of recovery and develop their own resiliency. Our Family Workshops are open to family members and loved ones ages 12 and older.

Please contact our Family Therapist, Judi Jenett for further information and/or registration. Assistance will also be provided with hotel reservations. You can contact Judi directly via email

From the Desk of Our CEO: The Art of Recovery

Monday, September 15th, 2014

For many people, September is a significant month. It marks the start of a new school year, the beginning of football season and the end of summer. For those of us in the substance abuse and mental health field, September is also a momentous time—it’s National Recovery Month.

This national observance educates the public on how addiction treatment and mental health services can allow individuals with substance use and mental disorders to live healthy, rewarding lives. In addition to teaching the public about addiction, Recovery Month gives treatment programs the opportunity to celebrate their successes.

With over 20 million people suffering from drug and alcohol addiction, it is imperative that The Treatment Center continues to spread the message that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can live long, happy lives in recovery. Every day we see miracles occur at The Treatment Center. Patients come to us in the depths of addiction and they leave treatment with renewed hope and a sense of purpose. For this reason, we ask you to join us at The Art of Recovery to celebrate the successes of our former patients and the millions of Americans who are thriving in recovery.

In honor of Recovery Month, we will host The Art of Recovery on September 26-27 at Within: Books Boutique Café in Lake Worth, FL.
This free, two-day event will highlight the talent of local artists, musicians and poets. Through their creative work, these artists will share their experiences of hope and strength that recovery brings.

The Art of Recovery will feature an:
• Open mic night on Friday, September 26 from 7-10 p.m.
• Art exhibit on Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.

We invite everyone to attend this event regardless of their age or their affiliation with the recovery community. For additional information about The Art of Recovery, please visit or call (561) 922-0313.

Best Wishes,
Bill Russell, CEO

8 Ways to Tell If You’re Spiraling Into Addiction

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

Addiction is a powerful, chronic illness that hijacks the brain. It’s a common myth that people who suffer from addiction can simply change their behavior without any professional help.

Addiction alters the chemical reaction in your brain and changes the way you think. Once you’ve experienced the euphoric “high” from drugs, your brain will crave more of the drug in order to reach that high again and again. This dependence can rapidly progress into addiction.

So how can you tell if you are spiraling into addiction? Here are some signs below:

1) Trying to Quit Drugs or Alcohol But Failing. You may have tried to quit, however, after one or more failed attempts you found yourself using again. When uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms occur after your last hit or drink, this is a sign you’ve become physically dependent on the drug.

2) Abusing One or More Drugs at a Time. You may have started using one particular drug and then gradually began abusing other drugs or alcohol simultaneously. Often, those who are addicted to drugs will take one drug to get that euphoric high and then take another drug such as a tranquilizer or depressant to “come down” off the drug.

3) Feelings of Guilt or Shame for Using. It’s common for addicts to feel guilt or shame for abusing drugs or alcohol. As a result, you may find yourself hiding your drug use or avoid talking about your drug or alcohol problem.

4) Anger or Annoyance Towards Others. You may feel angry, bitter, or simply annoyed by others who confront you about your drug use. You may even be in strong denial; however, if you are on this page, you are already questioning whether you need and want to get help.

5) Craving Use Within an Hour of Waking Up. Sometimes your dependence on drugs or alcohol can be so strong that you have cravings within an hour of waking up. If you feel the need to abuse drugs or alcohol the moment you wake up, then you may be physically dependent on them and putting yourself at more of a risk for overdose.

6) Medical Problems Due to Drug Use. If you’re abusing multiple drugs and/or heavily drinking alcohol, you may have noticed several physical changes such as rapid weight loss, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts just to list a few symptoms. The more addicted you become, the more at risk you put yourself for severe reactions such as psychosis or death from overdose.

7) Neglecting Family, Work, and Loved Ones. As your drug abuse increases, you may be more focused on getting that next high. Soon, your only goal is to get your next high or drink at anyone’s expense. Everything else may take a backseat, whether it’s your family, job or loved ones.

8) Problems with the Law. If you’ve had any run-ins with the law such as arrests for possession of drugs, DUIs, stealing or any other drug-related crimes, you may need to re-think your substance abuse.

If you’ve experienced any of the above signs of addiction, recovery is possible with evidence-based addiction treatment. There is no shame in seeking professional help for your addiction as it can save your life before it’s too late.

At The Treatment Center, we will address any underlying issues and get to the root of your addiction. Here, you can work towards your recovery while aiming to restore hope in yourself and your relationships.

From the Desk of Our CEO: On Managing Anxiety in Recovery

Tuesday, March 4th, 2014

Learning how to manage anxiety in healthy ways is a major part of recovery. At The Treatment Center, it is our responsibility to supply our patients with the tools they need to cope when they walk out of our doors. With anxiety being a leading cause for relapse, learning how to manage this trigger is a major part of the healing process.

Early recovery comes with a lot of anxiety for recovering addicts. After being caught in the grips of addiction, healthy coping mechanisms are destroyed. During this time, anxiety is dealt with in negative ways that can lead to the abuse of alcohol and drugs. At The Healing Center, our holistic therapy services have proven to reduce the anxiety that occurs during early recovery. Learning to control of these emotions is among the many tools we share with our alumni. We realize how crucial it is for our patients to learn how to deal with anxiety in order for them to continue new, healthy lifestyles.

There are millions in the U.S. who struggle with these feelings on a daily basis. At Within: Books Boutique Cafe, we are able to reach our community with the resources to learn about healthy coping mechanisms for these types of issues. On March 21st, we are hosting a book signing with author and speaker H Michael Zal. He will be discussing his book, “Ten Steps to Relieve Anxiety: Refocus, Relax and Enjoy Life.” In this book, Dr. Zal illustrates how to handle anxiety in ten easy to follow steps.

We encourage anyone who struggles with anxiety to attend. We look forward to hosting an event that will provide resources to those who are struggling in the community and help them lead happier, healthier lives.

Best Wishes,

Bill Russell, CEO

From the Desk of Our CEO: On Winning the Battle Over Addiction Conference

Thursday, October 17th, 2013

Overcoming shame is one of the main battles I see our patients face when they walk through our doors. I am proud to witness our pastors in the Road to Freedom program communicate to our patients that through God’s grace, the chains of their addiction and shame can be broken. We are proud to extend this hope into our community by sponsoring the Winning the Battle Over Addiction conferences.

The theme for the upcoming conference is No More Shame. We are looking forward to guiding pastors, counselors, addiction professionals and many more in helping others find freedom from the shame of addiction. This Winning the Battle Over Addiction Conference will be held on Friday, October 25th at Palm Beach Atlantic University’s De Santis Chapel from 9am-4pm. We welcome anyone who helps those affected by the bondage of addiction to attend.

Our keynote speaker is Jeff VanVonderen, an experienced pastor and interventionist who has been featured on the TV series, “Intervention.” Jeff has over 25 years of experience in the field of addiction recovery. We are also proud to have our Road to Freedom Director of Program Development, Pastor John Poitevent, as the host and speaker at the conference. John has over 20 years of experience with addiction working as a missionary, pastor and leader.

At each conference, we touch upon different aspects of addiction. By broadening the scope of Christ-centered recovery, we are able to better meet the needs of our patients and the community. We look forward to developing new relationships with others who share our passion of restoring hope to those who have been affected by addiction.

Best Wishes,

Bill Russell, CEO
