Panic attacks
What is a Panic Attack?
Panic attacks are episodes during which a person is overcome by feelings of intense fear, as well as a pounding heart, sweatiness, dizziness, weakness or faintness. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, panic attacks can occur anytime, even while sleeping. When a person has panic attacks repeatedly, it is believed that he or she has panic disorder.
Panic disorder is a very treatable mental illness, but if left untreated can develop into agoraphobia – fear of open spaces. This occurs when a person starts to avoid places and events where he or she has experienced a panic attack.
What are the symptoms of a Panic Attack?
During a panic attack, a person may look flushed and feel chilled – and may believe they are having a heart attack, losing their mind, or are on the verge of death. Other physical symptoms of a panic attack can include:
• Tingling/numbness in hands
• Nausea
• Chest pain
• Smothering sensations
• Feelings of unreality
• Impending sense of doom
• Fear of losing control
