Depression
What is depression?
Depression is one of the most widespread, and most treatable, mental illnesses – yet fewer than half of people suffering from depression actually seek treatment.
Sadly, some perceive a social stigma associated with depression – that it isn’t serious, that it’s some kind of personal weakness instead of a serious mental illness, and that they can deal with it on their own.
At The Treatment Center, we know that nothing could be further than the truth.
What are the symptoms of depression?
Although there are typical signs to look for in depressed individuals, keep in mind that different people experience depression differently.
The National Institute for Mental Health reports that the severity, frequency and duration of the following symptoms can vary greatly:
- Persistently sad, anxious, “empty” mood
- Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
- Irritability, restlessness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed
- Fatigue, decreased energy
- Difficulty with concentration
- Sleep disturbances – early morning waking , insomnia, or excessive sleeping
- Overeating or appetite loss
- Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
- Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps or digestive problems that don’t disappear during treatment
